Love at first sight strikes when young Tony spots Maria at a high school dance in 1957 New York City. Their burgeoning romance helps to fuel the fire between the warring Jets and Sharks -- two rival gangs vying for control of the streets.

West Side Story is a musical conceived by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents published in 1957. It was directed for film by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise and released in 1961 starring. This modern (2021) adaptation directed by Stephen Spielberg explores forbidden love and the rivalry between two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.
